Feasibility Study for Multiterminal Rigid Bipole

The National HVDC Centre is working with WindGrid to conduct a detailed feasibility study for a multi-purpose HVDC interconnector between Germany and the UK. WindGrid, a subsidiary of Elia Group, focuses on the development, construction, ownership and operation of electricity transmission infrastructure.

The proposed system will utilise an HVDC multiterminal Rigid Bipole configuration. The HVDC Centre will prepare models on the RTDS platform and perform a range of studies to investigate steady-state operation, energisation processes, and responses to faults and other disturbances. These studies will use generic models derived from previous work in related areas, building on the HVDC Centre’s significant experience with multi-terminal HVDC systems. The study outcomes will provide crucial information to WindGrid regarding the performance of the proposed design.
