Moyle Interconnector

The Moyle Interconnector, owned by Mutual Energy, connects the electricity grids of Northern Ireland and Scotland using underwater cables between converter stations in Ballycronan More, Islandmagee, County Antrim, and Auchencrosh, Ayrshire.

It has a dual monopole design with a 500MW capacity and uses LCC converter technology from Siemens Energy.

In 2022, the control and protection systems were upgraded to improve functionality, maintain reliability, and meet future energy demands in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The National HVDC Centre hosts a replica of the upgraded control and protection cubicles for Mutual Energy, alongside real-time models of the adjacent transmission networks. These are used to support the ongoing operation of the Moyle Interconnector.
